So after my first DemoCamp experience I thought I would write down a few notes. It was a really cool conference or anti-conference, and I meant some really cool people.

Demos Presentations

  • SceneCaster – SceneCaster is a 3D scene creator similar to SecondLife. This was a really cool demo, I think the best of the night. One awesome thing was that it had a really low footprint, a 7 MB plugin that can be installed IE and Firefox or you can just copy and paste a embed code and it will work without the plugin.
  • PlanetEye – PlanetEye is kind of like a travel book written in pictures. I really like the idea but one of the things I was thinking about during there presentation is why they are not they using Flickr’s KML for some of there pictures.
  • AskItOnline – AskItOnline is a online survey builder with a easy to use AJAX interface. It was the crowd favorite and the creator actually won a prize. It was cool, but I could help thinking if I had to do a survey online, I could just develop it from scratch using web.py. The next day I was talking to a few guys a work (how had no programming experience) and they all said they had to do surveys before and would love a system like that.
  • GigPark – Full discloser GigPark offered me a job which got lost in my Junk mail box and I found it a month ago. GigPark is a really cool idea of Friends recommending Friends, unlike LinkedIn which is Business Partners recommending Business Partners.
  • .NET Development on a Mac – A really cool demo about the Mono project and its develop application. I actually got to speak to Geoff Norton after his demo and I learned more about the stability of Mono and licensing issues it could raise with Microsoft (which is none). I actually got the develop application installed on my MacBook Pro and I am really excited to start using it in day to day.

Ignite Presentations

  • Social Services Mashup – This was an interesting presentation about non-profits getting connect to help people better make use of them.
  • The Future is Simple
  • Leveraging Things Wide Open
  • How to Rock
  • The State of Wireless in Canada Sucks
